Ducks are so familiar that everyone assumes they know them well. Yet most of us have missed a few remarkable details.
Take the classic "quack," for example. Only female ducks make that sound. Males produce a much deeper, raspier call, almost like a whisper. Most people have never noticed the difference.
This is one of the smallest duck breeds in the world. An adult Call Duck usually weighs only 0.5 to 0.7 kg — about a quarter the size of a typical meat duck.
A mallard can sleep with half its brain while keeping the opposite eye open, a process known as unihemispheric sleep. Ducks also produce oil that waterproofs their feathers. During migration, mallards can travel as far as 800 km in one day.
The ducks on Floor 1 gather around a small pond. They are most active early in the morning before 09:00 — "meeting" beside the water, preening, and foraging. It is the quietest moment of the day, before the crowds arrive.
Observation tip: Stand still and listen: which ducks quack, and which make a low, raspy sound? It is the quickest way to tell females from males.
