Dogs were domesticated because people needed them. Cats were different.
Around 10,000 years ago, people began storing grain. Rodents arrived, and wildcats followed them. People did not drive the cats away, so they stayed. No agreement was ever signed, but ten thousand years later the arrangement still stands.
This is why cats retain more wild instinct than most pets. They hear frequencies up to 79 kHz, twice the range of dogs. Their night vision is six times better than ours. Their reflexes are fast enough to catch a fly in midair.
The Cat Hideaway is home to four breeds with very different temperaments:
Here is a curious detail: adult cats in the wild almost never meow at one another. They developed this sound specifically to communicate with people — because it works. Cats learned to "talk" to us, not to each other.
The cats in the lounge are not kept in cages. No one picks them up for photos, and they do nothing unless they want to. That is precisely what gives meaning to the moment when one approaches you.
Some rub their heads against your legs. Some sleep through the entire visit. Others watch from a distance and decide you are not worth their attention. All three responses are genuine communication, never staged.
Observation tip: Sit down, stay quiet, and let the cats decide. Do not reach toward them. Cats become more curious when you stop trying to attract their attention. If a cat chooses to sit on your lap, that is not luck — it is a deliberate decision.
